Portugal: Língua e cultura: Caderno de trabalho e de laboratório. Writing and language laboratory manual

The Writing Manual and Language Lab Manual are contained in this volume. Each lesson starts out with exercises to be written, followed by what you need to do for your lab work. In the Writing Manual, exercises bear the same number as the structural sections in the book, and page numbers in the manual refer to the pages that the section occupies in the textbook. You will notice by the heft of the book that there is a lot of exercises—too many! We know this, and hope that instructors will pick the exercises that will do you the most good. If you should need to have lots of practice on a certain point, then there are plenty of exercises for that purpose. Some writing manuals in recent years have included a key to the exercises in the back of the book. We feel this is counterproductive and have not used that feature here, although a key has been made available to instructors. The textbook is filled with lots of natural language. We have used a similar technique here. Not all words in every exercise will be known to you, but these new words will mean what you think they mean! This is obviously a challenge, but we think it’ll pay off. We also think that you should have a Portuguese-English dictionary, just in case. The lab program that accompanies ”Portugal: Língua e Cultura” starts with a pronunciation exercise, each one dealing with one major sound responsible for the typical North American accent in European Portuguese. There is then a series of grammatical exercises. Some are fully oral, some are fully written, and some are half-oral and half-written. Some of them are accompanied by drawings so that you can answer questions which are confirmable by the tape. No exercise seen in the textbook or writing manual is duplicated in the lab program, so you will always be doing something fresh in the lab. Ending each taped lesson is a comprehension text, based on or continuing the cultural information from the book’s lesson, and a dictation (given without indication of punctuation). The language lab is where you go after you have thoroughly studied the lesson to practice and master what you have learned. You should be thoroughly familiar with the Vozes Portuguesas and the Leitura—there are three Vozes from the lesson on every tape and the Leitura is frequently adapted into a comprehension text.
